Intro to Philosophy: Worldviews In History
with Greg Marshall
Free
This class is designed to introduce students to the basic concepts of philosophical thought patterns throughout history. While we will not strictly be examining the people behind each philosophical movement (i.e., Plato, Aristotle, etc.- though we will touch upon many), we will look at distinct periods of time and the philosophical frameworks that dominated those periods. The core of our studies will examine the philosophical frameworks of theism, Deism, Secular Humanism, Nihilism, Existentialism, Pantheism, the New Age, and Post-Modernism. Using eight basic questions from James Sire’s book The Universe Next Door (6th edition), students will learn how each of these philosophical frameworks answers these distinct questions and how to apply these questions to all worldviews, both old and new (some other examples include Epicureanism, Stoicism, Marxism, Pragmatism, Relativism, etc.) We will illustrate each of these philosophical frameworks by interacting with movie clips relevant to each, readings from various sources, and excerpts from different books/articles. There will be weekly readings, video clips, robust class discussions, quizzes, and a mid-term/paper and final paper/project. This class will be taught from a Christian perspective.
