Applied Chemistry-Chemistry in the Kitchen - Honors Option Available

This is a PRACTICAL chemistry course for those who have students who hate math and science and are in tears thinking of a chemistry textbook they are supposed to choke down.  However, this is also the perfect science class for those students who LOVE science and want to learn some down-to-earth science they will use and enjoy knowing throughout their lives.

 Chemistry is NOT something that happens in a vacuum. It’s the world all around us and tied to many other things. Yes, your student will learn Chemistry while also getting to learn another important skill s/he can actually put to use – cooking! Chemistry that actually makes sense!

 If you are looking for a curriculum that will teach your students hard-core chemistry and chemical equations, this class may not meet your needs. However, if you are looking for an opportunity for your student to learn how chemistry affects day-to-day living and make broad connections about God’s master plan and design of His amazing creation, then jump in!

 There are a lot of cooking activities, which, of course, involve using a stove. It’s assumed that any students who participate in this class have been taught kitchen safety and will be supervised at all times during any and all activities.

 Students will be led through a high school-level applied chemistry course covering material such as acids & bases, atomic bonding, gases, ions, molecules, and their properties, oxidation, and reduction, the periodic table and elements, solutions, and organic chemistry.

Coursestorm Online Enrollment is Free. Course Fee: $550. A $50 non-refundable course enrollment deposit will be billed immediately upon registration and applies toward your overall tuition.  The balance must be paid by July 1, or select a payment plan of $250 payable by July 1 and November 1. 

Additional Fees: $100 yearly materials & lab fee, payable with the July tuition.

Course Meets: Tuesday/Thursday

Required Materials: Guest Hollow’s Chemistry in the Kitchen Curriculum, and—A number of books are needed, which can be found in the library or for purchase, ranging from $8 to $15.

• Each family will then have full access to the entire program, including the online version of the curriculum, printable versions in both PDF and WORD formats, all of the associated links within the schedule, as well as any online textbooks or workbooks, or other materials that might be included with the schedule, etc.
